Match Summary
West Indies Women vs. Ireland Women, 1st ODI, St Lucia, 26 June 2023
West Indies: 297-6 (50 overs: Hayley Matthews 109; Cara Murray 3-60)
Ireland: 239-9 (50 overs; Gaby Lewis 83; Hayley Matthews 3-53)
Result: West Indies won by 58 runs
Cara Murray’s exceptional bowling performance of 3-60 breathed life into the Irish fightback. Furthermore, opener Gaby Lewis showcased her brilliance with a splendid knock of 83, aptly supported by captain Laura Delany (40) and Orla Prendergast (37). Their collective efforts ensured that Ireland Women maintained a manageable run rate during the first half of the chase.
After losing the toss and being asked to bowl first, debutant Ava Canning immediately posed a threat with her renowned swing. However, it was Sophie MacMahon who claimed the first breakthrough by deceiving Zaida James (13) with an inswinging delivery, resulting in an LBW dismissal.
At 36-1 in the 10th over, the Irish sensed early signs of nervousness among their opponents. However, their hopes were soon dashed by a dominant 156-run second-wicket partnership between West Indies captain Hayley Matthews (109) and Stefanie Taylor (55). The duo relentlessly accumulated runs off just 153 balls, peppering the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground with shots all around the field.
Murray’s first wicket triggered a mini-collapse in the West Indies top order, with the hosts losing three wickets for just six runs in 15 balls. However, a counter-attacking unbeaten knock of 53 off 37 balls by Chinelle Henry revived the Caribbean side, allowing them to post a challenging total of 297-6 at the end of their 50 overs.
In the reply, Lewis and Leah Paul (10) formed a solid opening partnership of 34 runs until a mix-up resulted in Paul being caught well short of her crease. Lewis then partnered with Prendergast, and together they built a substantial foundation for Ireland’s charge in the final 25 overs. While Prendergast aimed to increase the run rate, she unfortunately perished at deep mid-wicket after contributing to a vital second-wicket partnership worth 67 runs. The subsequent partnership of 71 runs between Lewis and Delany propelled Ireland towards a credible path to an improbable victory.
The third-wicket stand, which lasted 83 balls, posed an increasing threat to the home side, mainly due to the effortless manner in which the Irish pair accumulated runs. Lewis, eyeing her first ODI century, fell prey to a caught sweep shot, triggering a middle-order collapse of 5-30.
A spirited 20 runs from Mary Waldron and a late contribution of 13 runs by Sophie MacMahon pushed the Irish total to 239. In a moral victory for the visitors, the final pair of Murray and Canning displayed resilience, holding their ground for 19 balls to ensure Ireland batted out their full 50 overs.
The two teams will meet again on Wednesday at the same venue for the second of three ODIs.
